El Salvador’s coffee producing industry has been through various waves of turmoil dating back to the 19th century. The Bourbon varietal holds a significant majority among Salvadoran-grown coffees and while it can attain a beautifully sweet and big bodied cup, it is extremely susceptible to leaf rust. Due to waves of leaf rust decimating certain production season’s yield, the exports have experienced extreme highs and lows though out the past decade. Agricultural technology and disease-resistant varietals are being slowly introduced to combat crop-yield inconsistencies.

The Murgas family has highly reputable production practices within the region of Ahuachapan, using appropriate shade for the plants and picking the cherries only when fully ripe. With this year’s harvest, they placed 9th in El Salvador’s ‘Cup of Excellence.’ While their season’s yields are relatively small, the quality of the coffee fetches it a much higher price per/lb. on the market.
